One of the most thrilling adventures that one can experience, is exploring along the Turkish
coast South-East of Bodrum. It is another world! Under the bluest of blue skies, with a brisk northwestern breeze
in the sails and steering south, Cape Crio is rounded some three, maybe four hours after setting out from Bodrum.
Right away we're face to face with antiquity. We drop anchor in the ancient commercial harbor of Cnidus, a city
once known for the manufacture of amphora's, the "shipping containers" of the Classical Age, and famed
for its statue of naked Aphrodite. Cnidus has been excavated, so the remains of the ancient city can be seen and
explored in the hillside location that resembles an amphitheatre. Further east. The next area to explore is the
ancient Gulf of Doris. Tiny villages lie next to vestiges of towns and cities that thrived in the Classical Age,
a treasure-trove worthy of exploration; a week spent here will pass only too quickly.
On the southern shore towards Marmaris, are the ruins of Loryma. Sail into the cove and you'll be stunned by the
remains of a castle right on the shore; it is probably a reminder of the glory of Byzantium. There is so much to
see along the coast between Bodrum and Marmaris that a Blue Voyage in this area usually starts in Bodrum and ends
in Marmaris.
The boats
Just outside of Bodrum is Içmeler -
here you find Europe's largest wooden boat building yard. An 18 meter Gulet, that's the name for this kind of boat,
can be build from scratch in 8 to 12 months.
Since the time of King Mausolos Bodrum has been an important centre for boat building. Ptolemäus from Egypt
had his warships made here in 300 BC.
